Empowering and promoting the rights of women and children in South Sudan

5.6 million women live in South Sudan, a beautiful place that has experienced dramatic upheaval in the past two decades. Women have suffered from rights abuses, violence, and displacement — but we dream of a better future.

Awake for Women and Children's Empowerment (AWACE) is a Christ-centered organization launched in 2017 to equip South Sudanese women and girls with the mindset and skill required to rebuild a stronger, more peaceful, and more equitable South Sudan.

We address the root causes of marginalization and poverty through Building Healthy Communities, Inspiring Girls’ Futures, and Equipping Strong Women so that women in and displaced from South Sudan are able to replace cycles of poverty with cycles of flourishing.

Building Healthy Communities

Many obstacles to overcoming poverty begin within us. Through trauma healing, counseling, sanitation initiatives, radio shows, and other programs, AWACE seeks to bring healing to the whole person and whole community so that they are able to take on the systems that perpetuate poverty.

Inspiring Girls’ Futures

Girls are the future of South Sudan, but they face unique challenges in completing their education and achieving their goals. AWACE facilitates girls’ clubs, health education, and other targeted programs to empower and equip girls to succeed.

Equipping Strong Women

Women in and displaced from South Sudan have the capacity to thrive but often lack the skills and connections necessary to build systems of financial inclusion and economic justice. AWACE focuses on mindset, business skills, savings, agriculture, and tailoring training to maximize opportunities for women to sustainably increase their families’ access to safety, healthcare, and education.
